Symptoms
Split rubber boot on the lower steering shaft, often spotted on weekly checks or flagged at MOT, sometimes with a knock through the wheel.
The fix, step by step
- The joint is held by two bolts; the upper section slides up to release it.
- A member quotes the workshop manual as calling for new bolts torqued to 30 Nm.
- You can fit just the boot if the joint is good, but it's awkward; replacing the joint assembly is easier.
