DIY repair · Land Rover Defender (L663)

Engine oil and filter (3.0 Ingenium diesel)

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 2 hours including undertray removalCOST Oil and filter

Symptoms

Due on the oil-life counter, or you want shorter intervals than the factory schedule.

The fix, step by step

  1. Drain through the sump plug: remove the two underbody shields (and any aftermarket front guard) to reach it.
  2. Defender2.net owners report refills of about 8.5–8.8 litres for the 3.0 diesel; one used 0W-30 to JLR spec 03-5007 with a new filter.
  3. Extraction through the dipstick tube works but the tube catches on ledges in the block, so mark the depth on your probe.
  4. Reset the oil service counter afterwards with a diagnostic tool, or the truck won't know it has fresh oil.
