Fix a transfer case that won't shift (linkage bushings)

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME ≈ 1 hourCOST A few dollars in bushings

Symptoms

The shifter moves but the transfer case won't go into 4-Low, or the lever flops around. The rod has usually popped out of a worn plastic bushing.

The fix, step by step

  1. Quadratec says to check this first when a TJ won't engage 4-Low.
  2. Under the Jeep, find the rod between the shifter and the NP231 or NV241OR range lever.
  3. Pop the rod out, pry out the old bushing, and press in a new one.
  4. Reconnect the rod and check that the shifter reaches every detent and the transfer case fully engages 2H, 4H, N and 4L.
  5. If the linkage has worn badly, or a body or motor-mount lift has changed its geometry, an adjustable or upgraded linkage is the permanent fix.
