Cure death wobble: track bar, ball joints and tie rods

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ An afternoon to diagnose; a day to replace partsCOST A track bar costs a little over $50 (Drivingline); full steering kits cost more

Symptoms

Uncontrollable side-to-side shaking of the front end, usually triggered by a bump at around 45 mph and stopped only by slowing right down.

The fix, step by step

  1. Quadratec's sequence: disconnect the steering stabilizer so it can't mask anything.
  2. With the key on and engine off, have a helper turn the wheel a quarter turn each way while you watch both ends of the track bar for movement.
  3. Then jack up the front and check tie-rod ends for play, ball joints by prying the tire, and wheel bearings by rocking at 12 and 6 o'clock.
  4. Inspect control arms and bushings.
  5. Tighten every steering and suspension bolt to spec, replace anything that moves, check tire balance and pressure, and finish with an alignment.
  6. Off Road Xtreme says a loose lower track-bar bolt is the most common cause.
  7. Drivingline warns a worn, oval frame-side hole may need drilling or an aftermarket bracket.
