Fix a transfer case that won't go into 4-Low

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME Under an hourCOST A few dollars in bushings, or an adjustable linkage

Symptoms

The lever moves but the transfer case won't fully engage 4-Low, or pops out of it. Quadratec says the factory 'Z-bar' linkage pops out of worn plastic bushings.

The fix, step by step

  1. Put the lever in neutral, chock the wheels and crawl under.
  2. Pry the linkage rod ends off the shifter and transfer-case arms, replace the worn plastic bushings, and snap the linkage back on.
  3. If the Z-bar is bent or the geometry has changed after a lift, fit an adjustable linkage and set it so the lever fully reaches every detent.
  4. Then test 4-Hi, N and 4-Lo with the engine running.
