Fix a push-button transfer case that won't shift

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hoursCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

The 4WD lights blink or the case won't go into (or out of) 4-High or 4-Low on an electric-shift truck.

The fix, step by step

  1. Bronco Zone owners point first at the shift motor and its connector: clean and reseat the connector and check for a broken travel stop.
  2. If the motor still doesn't respond, unbolt it from the BW1356, note the shift-shaft position and fit a new motor, replacing the shift seal while it's off.
  3. Match the new motor's position to the shift shaft before bolting it on.
  4. On a 1993 truck, check that recall 93V-089 (wrong shift motor) was done.
