Replace the clockspring

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME An hour or twoCOST One clockspring

Symptoms

Airbag warning light, horn or steering-wheel buttons that don't work, and cruise or audio controls dropping out. Quadratec lists it with the TIPM as the usual JK electrical culprits. On 2007–10 trucks, check recall 16V-290 first: Chrysler recalled the clockspring because dust contamination could stop the driver's airbag from deploying.

The fix, step by step

  1. Point the wheels straight ahead.
  2. Disconnect the battery and wait for the airbag system to discharge, as the factory manual specifies.
  3. Remove the airbag module and steering wheel, then the column shrouds.
  4. Unplug and remove the old clockspring and fit the new one centered, following its instructions (don't spin it).
  5. Reassemble, reconnect the battery and clear any codes.
  6. Quadratec Academy has a step-by-step JK video.
