DIY repair · Jeep Wrangler JK (2-door)

Gusset or truss a bent front axle

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME A day (welding required)COST Gusset/truss kit plus welding

Symptoms

Camber you can't align out, odd tire wear or changed steering on a JK running 35s or bigger. Quadratec warns that heavy tires and hard use can bend the axle C's where the ball joints sit.

The fix, step by step

  1. Have the axle checked first: a bent C needs straightening or a replacement housing before any gusset goes on.
  2. On a straight axle, strip the paint and coatings where the gussets and truss go and tack them in place.
  3. Weld in short alternating beads to limit heat distortion, then let it cool and coat it.
  4. Many owners do it with the axle out of the Jeep, along with the ball joints.
