DIY repair · Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited

Replace a front hub and bearing

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME ≈ 1–2 hours per sideCOST A hub assembly per side

Symptoms

A growl that changes with speed or while turning, play when you rock the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock, or an ABS light from a damaged sensor.

The fix, step by step

  1. Lift the corner and remove the wheel, caliper bracket and rotor.
  2. Unplug the ABS sensor, remove the axle nut and the three hub bolts from the back of the knuckle, and pull the hub (it may need persuading).
  3. Clean the knuckle face, fit the new hub, and torque the bolts and axle nut (Northridge4x4: 75 ft-lb hub bolts, 100 ft-lb axle nut).
  4. Mopar lists different hubs for 2007–2010 and 2011–2018 JKs, so order by year.
