T-5 jumping out of gear: rebuild or swap

DIFFICULTY 4 / 5TIME ≈ A weekendCOST Parts plus labor; a swap adds adapters and driveshaft work

Symptoms

On a 1985 CJ-7 thread, a T-5 behind the 258 popped out of first and third, grinding on downshifts.

The fix, step by step

  1. Jeep-CJ.com members' options: rebuild the T-5 with new bearings and synchros, or replace it.
  2. They call the T-176 the easiest swap, though the driveshafts must be modified for length.
  3. One owner fitted a Ford T-18 using an Advance Adapters kit, a replacement output shaft and four drilled-and-tapped bellhousing holes, and kept his driveshafts.
  4. Replace the clutch while the gearbox is out.
  5. The T-4 and T-5 take ATF+4 (2 qt), per ExtremeTerrain.

Tools & part numbers
