DIY repair · Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler

Rear main seal (258)

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ Half a day to a dayCOST Seal and pan gaskets plus labor

Symptoms

Oil dripping from the joint between the engine and bellhousing.

The fix, step by step

  1. Following Jeep's 1973 service-manual procedure (via IFSJA): drain the oil and drop the pan, then remove the rear main cap and lower seal half.
  2. Loosen the other caps and tap out the upper half with a brass drift.
  3. Oil the crank and fit the new upper half lip-forward.
  4. Put sealant only on the lower half's end tabs, seat it in the cap, seal the cap's chamfers and torque to spec.
  5. Refit the pan with new gaskets.
  6. Always replace both halves together.
