DIY repair · Ford Bronco II

Fix a liftgate that won't release

DIFFICULTY 1 / 5TIME ≈ 30 minutesCOST One washer

Symptoms

You turn the handle, feel resistance and a click, and the tension lets go without the gate opening, or it only opens if you push on the handle while turning it.

The fix, step by step

  1. This is the Bronco II Corral fix for a worn release catch.
  2. Remove the inner trim panel (screws around the edge, then slide it forward and pop the push-pins).
  3. Remove the two 9 mm nuts and the retaining plate and pull the handle out.
  4. Take out the 7/32 in screw on the end of the handle, lift off the latch arm, put a 9/16 in washer under it as a shim and refit the arm the right way round (the nub faces away from the word "Gate").
  5. Test the gate before refitting the panel.
  6. If you're stuck in the meantime, you can open the gate from inside by pulling one of the latch rods toward the center.
