Symptoms
Due on mileage or unknown history; dark or burnt-smelling fluid. There is no dipstick — the level is set at temperature through a check plug.
The fix, step by step
- With the truck level, remove the 24 mm refill plug first, then the 14 mm drain plug (about 5 qt comes out).
- Drop the pan (20 × 10 mm bolts), replace the filter and O-ring, clean the magnets and fit a new pan gasket; pan bolts 62 in-lb, filter bolts 7 ft-lb.
- Refill (Trail4R used 5.5 qt), then jumper OBD-II pins 4 and 13 to enter maintenance mode, cycle the shifter until the 'D' light stays solid, and check level through the 5 mm Allen check plug at 104–113 °F (solid D = in range, blinking = too hot).
- Let it drip to a dribble, refit the plug at 15 ft-lb.
