Valve cover gaskets (5VZ-FE)

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 3–5 hours (intake plenum access)COST Gaskets under $40; shop labor ≈ $250–500 (8020 Automotive)

Symptoms

Oil seeping down the heads, a burning-oil smell after a drive, slowly falling oil level.

The fix, step by step

  1. Heat cycles harden and crack the gaskets, so leaks only get worse.
  2. Access is the work: clear the intake plumbing to reach the covers, unbolt them, clean the sealing surfaces thoroughly, fit new gaskets and grommets, and torque the covers down evenly.
