Idler arm and front-end slop

DIFFICULTY 2 / 5TIME An afternoonCOST Parts plus labor

Symptoms

Wandering on the highway, play in the steering, clunks over bumps — worse on bigger tyres.

The fix, step by step

  1. With the front supported, check the idler arm, tie-rod ends and pitman arm for play.
  2. Separate the centre link from the idler arm with a puller, unbolt the arm from the frame and fit a new one, then torque and align.
  3. Off-roaders often upgrade to a heavier-duty arm or brace.
