Best International Scout years to buy, and which to avoid

3 generations of the International Scout, and for each one the model years owners and specialists recommend, the ones with documented problems, and the recalls to check. None has a single standout year, so buy on condition and history.

Sweet spot years owners and specialists recommend · Beware years with documented problems · Recall years with a recall to check by VIN. Each one is sourced on the model's own guide.

Scout 80 / 800

1961–1971

There's no agreed best year: rust decides, and an early Scout with a rotten frame is the expensive mistake. If you're choosing, the 800A (from late 1968) brought the Dana 20 transfer case and a Dana 44 rear axle, and the V8s are the ones for highway speed. Cars Counsel rates every 80 and 800 'good with inspection' because of parts scarcity and age.

International Scout II

1971–1980

There's no consensus year, and rust matters more than any of them. After 1974 every Scout II has Dana 44s at both ends and power front discs. Moses Ludel of 4WD Mechanix calls 1979 'a good model year' and says the only advantage of a 1980 is the one-year Dana 300 transfer case with its lower low range. Hagerty says the 1977–79 Super Scout II is the most valuable.
