Lada Niva (VAZ-2121 / 4x4 Legend)

1977–present

In the US, only trucks over 25 years old can be imported, so the choice is a 1.6 VAZ-2121 (four-speed, through 1993) or an early 1.7 21213 or 21214 (five-speed, from 1993–94). The 1.7s are torquier and have the low-lip tailgate, while the pre-1985 trucks with chrome trim are the collector pieces. Wikipedia mentions a 1980 truck that sold in Russia for 3.2 million roubles in 2016. Elsewhere, the 2009–2011 21214M updates, ABS from late 2011 and the maintenance-free hubs from October 2016 make later trucks easier to live with. Whatever the year, the best Niva is the least rusty one.
