DIY repair · Mercedes-Benz G 500

Harmonic balancer (M113)

DIFFICULTY 3 / 5TIME ≈ 2.5 hoursCOST $250–450 labor

Symptoms

Vibration at idle, a visibly wobbling crank pulley, rattle or chirp that changes with RPM, cracked or bulging rubber, belt squeal. Don’t keep driving it: if the outer ring lets go you lose power steering, charging and the water pump.

The fix, step by step

  1. Remove the belt and fan as needed, hold the crank pulley with a counter-hold tool, and break the 27 mm centre bolt loose.
  2. Fit the new balancer with a new front crank seal while you're there; a new centre bolt (112 031 00 71, M16 × 1.5) is cheap insurance.
  3. MercedesMedic's M112/M113 guide gives the bolt torque as 200 Nm plus a further quarter turn (90°) — confirm against WIS for your engine.
