Hummer H1
1992–2006Flash Off-Road says many owners consider the 1998 the quintessential pre-Alpha truck. It has the 1997.5 HVAC, better sound insulation, the 2.56 axles and the last of the Torsen I differentials, before ABS and TorqTrac4 arrived in 1999. Its turbo diesel sits right in the No. 8 crack window, though (see the next question), so test the block or look for a replacement engine. Flash Off-Road calls the 2004, with its new interior, Optimizer engine and optional Eaton lockers, the best stock truck yet, and says 2004 is a big step up from 2001 for noise and comfort. The 2006 Alpha is 'an order of magnitude better' on and off road. Autotrader calls it the ultimate H1, and Hagerty found Alphas worth over 40% more than a comparable 2004. The 1992–93 6.2 trucks are simple and a favorite of hard-core off-roaders, but slow.
